Yu-Gi-Oh! Extra Deck Summoning: Materials and Monster Zones

Before summoning from your Extra Deck, check the monster’s material requirements and an available legal zone. Under standard TCG rules, your starting Extra Deck can contain 0–15 cards, not necessarily 15. Your format and card effects can impose further restrictions.

Match the materials to the monster

The official rulebook explains the basic procedures. Read the monster and any effect you use for exceptions.

Summon	Basic check
Fusion	Meet the Fusion Monster’s listed material requirements and follow the card or procedure performing the summon. It determines where materials come from and what happens to them. Polymerization is one option, not a universal requirement.
Synchro	Normally use a face-up Tuner and face-up non-Tuners you control, following the monster’s material text. Their Levels must total the Synchro Monster’s Level; send the materials to the Graveyard.
Xyz	Normally use face-up monsters you control with the Levels and number specified on the Xyz Monster. Stack them beneath it as material. An Xyz Monster has a Rank, not a Level.
Link	Use face-up monsters you control that satisfy the material text and total the required Link Rating. A Link Monster used as material counts as 1 or its own Link Rating. Materials are sent to the Graveyard, not Tributed.

For example, a Level 3 Tuner and Level 5 non-Tuner total Level 8, but must still meet the Synchro Monster’s specific material requirements. For Link Summons, reaching the rating alone does not replace the required number or types of monsters.

Choose the right zone

Konami’s rules update makes this distinction:

• Face-down Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters from the Extra Deck: use an available Main Monster Zone or an available Extra Monster Zone. You do not need a Link Monster to summon another one.
• Link Monsters and face-up Pendulum Monsters from the Extra Deck: use an available Extra Monster Zone or one of your available Main Monster Zones that a Link Monster points to.

Pendulum Summoning also brings monsters from your hand into your Main Monster Zones. With two scales, you can Pendulum Summon once per turn during your Main Phase, choosing eligible monsters whose Levels are strictly between the scales. Scales 1 and 8 allow Levels 2–7. Face-up Pendulum Monsters coming from the Extra Deck still need the zones described above; monsters from your hand do not need Link arrows.

Check your list, then your play

1. Check your event’s rules and the applicable Forbidden & Limited List.
2. Read your chosen monster’s current text, prepare its materials and check any active effects that restrict summoning.
3. Identify the destination zone before moving cards. Ask a judge about an uncertain interaction at an event.
