How to Build a Yu-Gi-Oh! Side Deck: Rules and Swap Plans

A useful Side Deck gives your deck a different answer between games of a match. Start with the matchups you expect and the cards you can afford to remove, rather than a universal list of fifteen staples.

Check the rules before choosing cards

For standard constructed TCG play, Konami’s US tournament policy and European policy allow 0–15 Side Deck cards. The usual three-copy maximum counts Main, Extra and Side Decks together. A Limited card permits one copy in total; putting another in the Side Deck does not create an exception. Check the current list and effective date for your format and the rules for your region and event. Other game formats can differ.

Between games, exchange Side Deck cards one for one with Main or Extra Deck cards. Each section keeps its original size, and Main/Extra card types stay in the appropriate section. For example, exchanging three Main Deck cards in a 40-card Main/12-card Side setup leaves those sizes at 40 and 12. Show your opponent that the Side Deck count is unchanged. Restore the original registered configuration before the next match.

Give every slot a job

In practice games, identify what stopped your deck: a particular monster board, back-row cards or graveyard effects. Test an answer that addresses that problem without disabling your own strategy. Read its activation conditions and costs, then decide what comes out. An impressive answer is less useful if drawing it prevents your deck from functioning.

Try the swaps when playing first and when playing second. Keep enough starters and required engine cards to execute your own plan. There is no fixed number of changes that suits every deck or matchup.

Practise the whole exchange

Before the event, rehearse selecting cards, recounting and shuffling. The cited TCG policies require those tasks in less than three minutes. Prepare your choices through practice: outside matchup notes cannot be consulted during a match, including between its games. Ask a judge about event-specific questions before play.
