Yu-Gi-Oh! Card Condition: Inspect Your Cards Before Buying or Selling

🧐

To assess a Yu-Gi-Oh! card, inspect the actual copy and apply the rules of the marketplace where you plan to buy or sell. TCGplayer and Cardmarket use different condition scales. A seller’s Near Mint label does not predict a professional grading score.

Inspect the whole card

With clean, dry hands, hold the card gently by its edges over a clean surface. Use bright, diffuse light and check the front and back. Tilt the card to reveal foil scratches, scuffs and dents; do not bend it to test its strength.

Look at all four corners, the edges and both surfaces. Note whitening, scratches, creases, stains, peeling or ink. Photograph the whole front and back, then take close-ups of any defects. A sleeve or a single straight-on photo can conceal wear. Do not rub, polish or recolor a card to improve its appearance.

Choose the marketplace’s scale

TCGplayer’s condition guide uses Near Mint, Lightly Played, Moderately Played, Heavily Played and Damaged. It does not offer Mint or Gem Mint listings.

Cardmarket’s guide uses Mint, Near Mint, Excellent, Good, Light Played, Played and Poor. Its Light Played label is not an automatic equivalent of TCGplayer’s Lightly Played. Read the relevant provider’s full criteria and compare the defects you actually see, rather than converting abbreviations.

For a purchase, ask for clear photos if condition matters to your decision. For a sale, describe visible defects alongside the condition label. If you cannot confidently choose a category, ask the marketplace for guidance before listing.

Compare prices for matching copies

Match the set number, edition, language and rarity before comparing condition. Prefer recent completed sales for the same printing and similar wear; an asking price is not a completed sale. There is no fixed percentage discount that works for every card or every condition step. When comparable sales are scarce, keep the price estimate uncertain.

Keep condition and grading separate

A raw-card condition label does not convert directly into a numeric grade. PSA publishes its own grading standards; a home inspection cannot guarantee the result. Before paying for grading, compare the full costs and several possible outcomes, including keeping or selling the card ungraded.

Keep an inventory you can check

YuScan can help identify cards and organize your collection. Check the matched printing, edition and language against your physical copy. Inspect condition yourself: a scan does not authenticate a card or assign a professional grade. Keep your defect photos with your selling records so a buyer can see the copy you are offering.
